If you haven't tried it yet...

Sat, 06/13/2009 — Robin

If you haven't yet tried out Kidzui, I urge you to give it a try. The basic child-friendly browser is free, and a paid subscription is available for interested parents. Let me tell you why I'm so impressed with Kidzui:

  • Everything your child accesses has been reviewed and approved by education professionals, and new sites are being added all the time. This takes a lot of stress off you to ensure that your child is safe online.
  • The information displayed to your child is filtered and selected based upon the age of your child, and his or her interests. This information changes as your child changes.
  • The Kidzui browser window is maximized upon login, so your child has no access to other windows while the browser is running. If you're like many other parents, and you haven't yet set up a separate limited account for your child, then this offers you some added protection.
  • You receive regular reports that keep you informed about what your child is doing online - what sites do they like, while topics interest them, and so much more. If your child is school-age, and has a report to do, you can keep up with the research he or she is doing.
  • Kidzui has been written about many times - all you need to do is use google or another search engine to read what people are saying about it. It's not a tool that parents need to worry about, and it opens up the world to your child. There is so much more out there beyond pbskids, nickelodeon, disney, and barbie.com.

If you haven't had the time to try it out, I urge you to make a little time one evening after the kids have gone to bed, go to the site (just click on the icon to the right), and get started. If you try it out for an hour or so, and don't like it, go ahead and uninstall it, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

It's that time of year again...

Fri, 05/29/2009 — Robin

In just a few weeks, the 2008-2009 school year will be over. I am so proud of every one of my students! The kindergartners are just about done with their first PowerPoint presentation, and with the Memory Books they've made this school year. Their files will be available to parents here on their school pages. Parents will find a guide here on the site to help them download what their children have made.

Their younger friends are wrapping up their first year skills, and next fall will be ready to start working in Microsoft Word. Every one of them is the best!!!

Do you have someone in your life who needs to understand more about using the computer as a tool? Maybe it's a son or daughter in elementary school who knows about games on the computer, but doesn't know how to use applications properly to create fabulous assignments for school? Maybe it's you, a friend, a parent - someone who never had much reason to use a computer before and now wants to become a confident user? Do you want to develop certain skills to use at work or to get a different job? Our classes are just what you're looking for!

We currently conduct classes in the following locations:

Adults Soon to be Graduating!

Thu, 05/07/2009 — Robin

Members of a Basic Computer Skills class for adults that has been meeting at the VFW Post 4487 in Middletown are in the home stretch of their class. Most of the time, students who enroll are just interested in Windows PC skills, but this class was a combination of Windows PC and Apple users, so we used both in class. Next week will be their last lesson, and they'll be receiving their certificates! Great work to each of you!!!!

New classes are forming that will run in Middletown over the summer. We're also enrolling for Thursday evening classes in Warwick. If you're interested in learning more or in signing up, please call 401.935.1802, or email info@ri-computerlearningservices.com. Soon there will be an enrollment form here on the site, but it's not ready yet.

PS: 5/12/09 - They DID IT!!! Congratulations to all!!! Great job!
