We understand that:
- children often explore technology fearlessly, with little regard for proper equipment usage or fundamental skills
- the games and web sites children use do not necessarily lead to academic success
- parents want their children to become confident and capable technology-users so that they can use those skills to excel in school and beyond
- not all parents have the time or knowledge to teach their children at home.
We know how to make CompuChild classes fun and successful, using professionally developed lesson plans, carefully chosen software applications, and periodic enrichment activities that allow children to explore their creative side using digital cameras and microscopes, printers, and other peripheral devices. CompuChild classes guide children to skill mastery and the proficient use of technology.
We also understand that
- there are adults who haven't had the opportunity or time to learn about computers
- many people feel computer anxiety even though they want to learn
- adults want to learn in an environment where they will succeed.
Our grown-up classes allow adults to learn in small groups where they can practice what they're learning, feel comfortable asking questions, and develop into confident computer users.
RI Computer Learning Services, LLC was started in 2005. The company owns the RI franchise of CompuChild USA, dedicated since 1994 to providing technology education to young children to prepare them for academic success. Robin Gardner is the member/manager of RICLS, and your CompuChild Program Director for Rhode island. Robin graduated from the University of Connecticut with a ten-year teaching certificate, but went into the computer field instead where she worked as a computer scientist for twenty six years, mainly in the defense industry. During that time, she specified, designed, developed, tested, and documented numerous systems on a wide variety of computers for a wide variety of platforms both military and commercial; mentored junior personnel, and developed and conducted numerous training sessions and curricula. Some of those computers she used so long ago are in the Smithsonian and discussed in textbooks! After 26 years as a computer scientist, Robin decided to leave the defense industry, and RICLS and CompuChild USA combine the best parts of her previous experience. She is patient with all her students, both young and young-at-heart, answers all their questions, and helps every student achieve success. In addition, she is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the Rhode Island School Age Association (affiliated with the National AfterSchool Association), and the International Technology Education Association (ITEA).
